Saints drown late charge by Bath to win

Saints stopped Bath having the chance to receive a win from their last charge. The Saints day included: 4 tries, 4 Conversions and a penalty to secure the victory over the Leaders of the table, Bath.
A Penalty try kicked the day off, which was followed by tries from Calum Clark, Christian Day and George Pisi which rounded the game up.
Before the game started, a spine-tingling minute applause for the 13 year old, Northampton boy, Luis Ghaut who sadly died of Cancer this week. Luis was a huge part of Northampton Saints players and fans lives, who were determined to go out and win for Luis.
Saints applied pressure from the offset which made Bath's player number 15, Arscott to make a mistake, ending up with a yellow card for a deliberate knock on. Seconds later, Wigglesworth blew his whistle under the post for a penalty try. Swiftly, being converted by Myler.  Saints continued to demand in every aspect of the game, and were comfortably in the lead. This showed when George Pisi thundered through the middle and Saints sent the ball quickly to the right for Calum Clark to score. Myler stroke the ball over the post for a sensational lead of 14-0 in the first 15 minutes.
With Arscott returning from the sin bin, Bath showed determination - putting the ball over the tryline by Wilson and Ford converting. The hunt for the win was on. Saints were soon putting more pressure on in the scrum, which helped us gain another three points by Myler kicking over for a penalty.
Bath were not giving up. Ford boots over a penalty for George Pisi not rolling away - making the score 17-10.
Both sides were looking strong and a win was not in the bag for Saints yet, Myler missing his first penalty of the day, laid even more pressure onto Saints to keep Bath from scoring.
The second half kicked off with the same intensity as the first, Fisher broke through, shaking off Bath defence and gave the ball to Foden who helped break through more of Bath's defence. A late pass gave the ball to Day who was sent over the line to score a try for Saints. A tricky conversion scored beautifully by Myler. A win looked admiment to Saints, although, a late try by Woodburn gave his side late hope for the victory.
A driving maul by Bath gave them a penalty, kicked over by Ford put them only seven point between Saints. TMO denied a last chance win for Bath. Saints stayed strong all game.
Franklin's Gardens roared when the final whistle went. They had beaten the Leaders of the Premiership.
Man of the Match: Dylan Hartley (captain)

Preview to Bath Home

Bath Home. Normally I'm very excited to know that we will smash Bath and be very happy but with their recent victory of 45-0 to Leicester, I'm not so sure a massive win is on the table.

I believe we can still win, however big that score line was.

A big head to head in the game will be George Ford v Stephen Myler. Who will get the England number 10 shirt ? Maybe this game will decide (I hoping Myler of course!)

The last time we met Bath, was down in Cardiff. Which we beat them! So why not again ?

On a sad note, Luis Ghaut, the brave 13 year old, has sadly died of cancer. He was a massive part of Saints and will be in years to come. We must fight on and we must play on for Luis. Slight tight Luis. You will be missed by many.

Review of Newcastle Away: A Saintly win by Northampton

I come into this game with high expectations for saints to win, considering they are champions. Unfortunately, a late injury call by Saints leaves Tom Wood out for this week but newly signed Jon Fisher replaces him to make his first premiership start.

The first 10 minutes demonstrated what we could do. Straight away Newcastle showed how powerful they could be, their attack and defence equally as strong as each other but Saints dominated pretty quickly. A near try by Ken Pisi in the second minute exhibited their potential but then only 2 minutes later, Hooley went over the try line for a polite and not so fancy try, then immediately converts:  4 minutes in, Saints were 0-7 up.

A yellow card is given by Greg Garner for Newcastle number 8 Hoggs, for tackling off the ball. Hooley kicks for a penalty, making it 0-10. Hooleys kicking is very much on point today; Saints reveal a very fast pace and dangerous game.

First silly error by saints was seen in the 9th minute. Burrell beautifully intercepted a pass to then fumble it across the floor; however, still showing authority. Only two minutes later, as Saints shuffle towards the try line, a sudden penalty is given towards Saints. Hooley soon swiftly kicks it over the post for another 3 points. 11 minutes in and Saints are winning 0-13.

Finally, Newcastle start to move forward and go into Saints half, but soon later, a spilt ball gives the chance to Courtney Lawes to grab and run. A few phases later and quick passes from North to Manoa, lets Waller charge over the try line - 14 minutes in. Unfortunately, Hooley does not convert but Saints are winning, 0-18. Perfect start to the game from a Saints fans point of view.

Newcastle suddenly unveils a bit of pace but Saints defence are looking strong. A massive hit by Ma'afu: This results in a TMO decision of being too high around the neck. Newcastle gets a penalty which is easily kicked over by their number 10, Socino, making the score 3-18.

Saints continuously looking dominant: especially in the first scrum of the game, 22 minutes in. Coming out the scrum, the ball goes from Manoa to Fotuali'i. Luckily, Greg Garner blows the whistle to come back for a penalty. Newcastle number 3, Brookes seen illegally bringing down the scrum. Hooley, gracefully slots the ball through the post to make it 3-21, with 23 minutes gone.

Silly errors are costing Newcastle. Another turnover from a spilt ball gives the opportunity for Manoa to pass to Fotuali'i who cheekily offloads to Ken Pisi, who handles well for a try right in front of the posts. Newcastle's defence were too relaxed to catch Pisi as he charges for the line. Another easy converted try by Hooley takes it to 3-29 (26 minutes.)

Courtney keeps enforcing the Lawes with his tackles. Saints defence is incredible, there was only been a few errors. This is then backed up with Saints showing their power in the scrums even when Newcastle are lying on the pressure. On the other hand, attack is looking solid as well: an impressive look by defence and attack.
Newcastle gives away another stupid mistake, knock on again.  This is then countered by George Pisi doing exactly the same thing, Scrum given to Newcastle.

Saints look controlling in attack once again but an unusual error by George North stops us. The ball is taken by Cato who promptly breaks free for Newcastle, which leads into them going past the 5 metre line. Half time is shown on the clock but play still continues. Opportunities are not grabbed and then Newcastle does not release the ball. Defence were too strong for Newcastle to handle.
Half Time whistle goes. Score is 3-28, to Saints.

Second half and Newcastle Falcons come out raring to go. A slight hint of ambition by Newcastle: this is then backed up by getting closer and closer to the try line, moving through the phases, slowly but surely. No try is achieved by the much better looking side.

Lawes is taken off in the 45 minute with a worrying looking injury to his shoulder. James Craig replaces.

Taken quickly, a tap and go by Newcastle who then make it very close to getting a try. Tuilagi gets taken out by George Pisi, but the game goes back to earlier advantage. Saints are reminded by the ref about discipline.  Saints defending hard denies a try for Newcastle. G. Pisi showing real power in his tackles today.

In the 56th minute Dickson came on for Fotuali'i, Dowson came on for Clark and Denman on for Ma'afu. Kahn Fotuali'i, Salesi Ma'afu and Calum Clark all having good games respectively.
56 minutes in and the game takes a slower pace.

3 minutes later, Dom Waldouck comes on for George Pisi, who in my opinion had a fantastic game. influential hits and good handling skills; unfortunately no try to show his authority in the game, then not soon after, Corbisiero on for Alex Waller in the 62nd minute.

The Game almost goes dormant for 10 minutes until a quick tap and go by Newcastle gives them a try by ex- Saints player Noah Cato. This is then convertered by Socino to make the score 10-28.
Wilson on for Hooley: Hooley had a cracking kicking game with only missing one conversion and Mcmillan on for Hartley: Hartley had a quiet and consistent game but all was positive.

North, with 2 minutes remaining - suddenly puts the rockets on. Dodging past the Newcastle defence, a few passes later and good handling skills by Saints secures them the bonus point try by no other than George North himself. Wilson converts to make the final score 10-35.

Overall, Saints played a dynamic and skilful game. Improvements were seen from last week already. They constantly testified they had the upper hand. They are clearly a controlling side, who will be hard to beat in weeks to come. I hope Saints play with this much dominance and ambition next week when we face Bath at Franklin Gardens.

Newcastle Preview

Newcastle Away. Hmm. Not really much I can say on this. I know I shouldn't say this but this is an easy game. We have pretty much won all our games against Newcastle so let's carry on with that trend.

I'm feeling very very hopefully for this season in all games we play. Losing against Wasps last weekend was a massive mistake. It was a game we should of won but lets move on and forget about that result, remember we did win the premiership with losing against Gloucester early on in the season!

Unfortunately, I won't be going but have a safe journey to those who are, get those singing voices on!

Also, on a personal note, yesterday, I received a call from the editor of Northampton Herald and Post, Steve Scholes, explaining how he loved my blog and wanted me to write some stuff for the paper. This is a great opportunity which I look forward to. Thank you for the support and messages I have received!

Wasps v Saints review

Wasps away. We always knew it was going to be hard but no way was a loss meant for us. 20-16 is still a good score in my opinion, we got a losing bonus point which is better than no points. As the season comes to an end, bonus points are always key.
Wasps are strong ish side this year. They are obviously the dark horses of the premiership this year.
2 quick tries for them, lost the game for us. In my opinion, everyone played averagely. No one really shone for me. We obviously have many improvements to make but I truly believe we can still do it. We are champions of england right?
Also, Corbs having a yellow?! What?! Corbs is one of the people in the squad I least expected a yellow from but retaliation is wrong so in a way I agree with Luke Pearce on this one.
Remember it is only round 2, we have many more rounds to win and still time for us to beat important teams. It will be our time once again.
Let's reform. Collect ourselves and show that champion spirit we have within us.

Preview to London Wasps

Here we go, round 2 of the premiership! With our tremendous win over Gloucester we are on the road to success.
Wasps away is always a difficult game. With their performance against Saracens it just complicates matter.
I truly believe that we can do it.
In one, we are extremely lucky not to have Christian Wade playing but on the other hand, I hope he fully recovers from his car accident this week. From what we know it sounded pretty bad. I never like to see any Rugby player hurt whether it was on the pitch or not. So I guess I'll have to wait till him comes to Saints to see him play.
Last Friday night showed how jelled we are as a team, bringing no signings in has helped us. We don't need anyone. Our focus now is fully on game play and nothing else.
A win will be perfect, especially with our season last year.
So another hat-trick for northy? Or will North go for the forth?

Saints V Gloucester review

Yes. Well urm.... I think we won that. An incredible start to the season, just how we wanted it to be. We are as hungry or maybe more than we were last year. Can we make it champions twice in a row? Yes. Yes we can.

Everyone had their positives and negatives but to me Ken Pisi, George North, Jon Fisher, Samu Manoa and Courtney lawes really stood out.

Ken Pisi was hungry for a try or two. He has changed the way he plays, I'm not initially sure how or what he does differently but I like it. He seems easier as a player, like its natural.
George North. Well this bloke definitely had his rocket boots on ! 3 tries. No way can I complain about that. Sad to see North didn't get a Fourth. (Sorry for the lame rhyming)
Next, we move onto Jon Fisher, try on his debut ? Not bad going for a forward. Some people click with teams and some don't. Jon looks like he has played within the squad for years ! He's a big lad too, I hope to see some huge things from him in the future.
Do I really need to explain what Samu and Courtney did well ? let's just say their tackles.

Playing a game where the ref is not the best, is hard but the boys turned their anger energy into tackles and running power.  Especially, when George North got tackled off the ball - this wasn't all Waynes Barnes' fault, the sideline ref should of picked it up too but we have learnt not to get George North angry otherwise the machine comes out to play!

Personally, everyone played a huge positive part in the win. 53-6 ? That score doesn't happen everyday. I truely can't believe we won by that much!
I'm so proud of what they achieved in this game. Preseason training is definitely paying off, so let's carry on like this?

Next game is London Wasps, Away. This, in the past, was always a hard game for us, but maybe that's about to all change.

We stormed into Franklins Gardens to say 'This is us , champions of England'
And the scored reflected this hugely.

Preview to Gloucester and the season

It feels like only a few weeks since we won the Amlin and Premiership but the new season has arrived (Finally!)

First Game Gloucester, some certain controversy hangs over this game. Last year Away at Gloucester a last minute penalty sealed the win for Gloucester but if we look at the positives we really saw what George North could do when he put his rockets on and we came out that game with the famous phrase

'' Made in Wales, finished in Northampton''

That try was easily one of my favourite premiership tries from last year ( and of course Tom Woods monster of a try in the semis!)

So to look forward to in this season to come is many more beautifully executed tries ,some hard hitting tackles (probably Samu Manoa and Courtney Lawes, I can always count on them!) and then maybe a trophy or two at the end of it?

It was announced a few days ago that Wayne Barnes is our ref. I'm not going to say too much about this but let's hope that there will be no controversy (like stopping the game 9 seconds early!) A nice clean game of rugby with the best team winning at the end of it.

Finally, to everyone who is going to any away games this year, Have a safe journey and get those singing voices on!

All together now Oooohhhh wheennnnn the Sainnnttttssss....
